Shrine to the Dragon God

It is finally finished – hurray!

I skipped a few of the more complex shadows, but as an experiment in colour and lighting, this was interesting.

New painting – everyone’s favourite space art trope 🙂

Tai & Three Shadow

Out of Place is fast turning into one of those projects where I do a ton of dev-work, but never actually manage to get anything written. That’s basically the story of my life these days, but with that in mind, here’s the completed version of an OoP-related painting:

Tai & Three Shadow

This is a long way from perfect. I’ll freely put my hand up in the air and admit that – it got a bit overambitious. (Shadows? Multiple figures? Defined lighting? Perspective? Oh my.) Needless to say, a lot eventually went wrong. Still, at least I got it finished, so there is that.

Ash Lizard line art

Time for a bit of line art. This is an illustration from an ongoing personal project. The Ash Lizards (not what they call themselves, their actual name being physically-unpronounceable by anything with a human larynx/jaw) are intended as one of the more “familiar” alien species from Out of Place. They’re arguably just barely something that could have evolved here on Earth, although even then, there is some serious weirdness.

Breaking Quarantine

Posted in Art with tags , on December 23, 2013 by davidnm2009

This year I decided to take part in the annual gift-exchange on the LiveJournal Mass Effect community. I’m glad I did; having a project to work on was good, and it also made me go a little bit out of my artistic ‘comfort zone’. It also felt good to be doing something generous.

I can probably break quarantine on these now, as they’ve been posted to the community. I ended up working on two of the prompts that I was given. (I actually had a go at all three, but one of them was, uh, not any sort of success, shall we say!)

First off, here’s the Normandy with the Citadel, and some rather-badly-fluffed shadows:

Secondly, here’s a portrait-piece of one of the giftee’s incarnation of Shepard:

The gibbous-phase background moon/planet, unfortunately, looks a bit weird. It’s arguably accurate astronomically, but a crescent or a half-phase would probably have worked better from a visual point of view. Another one for the learning curve, and all of that…

It’s been a while, hasn’t it?

But here’s a new painting:

Turian Line Art

Some line-art for a Monday morning:

Yep, I’m jumping on the draw-your-multiplayer-characters bandwagon, so here’s Lt. Sarus Pallin, my turian Infiltrator from Mass Effect 3. Also, it’s always bugged me a bit that Firebase London doesn’t really look that much like Real!London (red phone boxes everywhere? in the C22nd? really?). So I decided to model the background on Real!London. In case you’re wondering, there’s no real reason why I picked on Goodge Street, except that it’s relatively easy to draw. Ideally I’d have preferred Mornington Crescent or perhaps Aldwych (because it’s always a dangerous move!), but those two would have posed some really tricky problems to sketch and compose.
